Lot 1139
1830. PCGS graded AU-58. A nice untoned coin with reflective fields. The sufaces are pleasing and the color is classic yellow gold. The strike is sharp on Libety's curls as well as most of the wing feathers save for a few near the shield on the left side. Only 4,540 struck, with about 80 to 120 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. This is one of the so called Kneasss's modified Capped Head designs, issued from 1829 into the early months of 1834. The price of gold had risen to the point that these were worth melting for the bullion value and profit at their time of production, hence nearly the entire production was melted leaving precious few survivors for collectors today. Hence the rarity of these popular quarter eagles today. Pop 13; 39 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7670) Estimate Value $14,000 - 15,000

1894. PCGS graded Proof 65 Deep Cameo. A super untoned Deep Cameo Proof. These proof gold coins are truly the caviar of American numismatics. They were issued in extremely low numbers, suvival rates are low, and finding a highly appealing gem like this, with the Deep Cameo contrast, is quite the challenge. Here is one of the finer examples known today, with all the glorious contrast on could hope to find. Only 122 struck. Pop 5; 7 finer for Deep Cameo at PCGS. 1903. NGC graded Proof 67+. A fully white Gem Proof. This one is tied with a few others as one of the very finest to survive. The 1903 quarter eagles were struck in the all mirror format, with much less contrast than seen in previous years. The surfaces are virtually perfect and studying this coin with a loupe is a most pleasureable experience. A stellar example. Only 197 struck. Pop 2; 1 finer in 67+ Star. 1905. NGC graded Proof 67+ Cameo. Fully brilliant and near perfect. The strike is absolute and precise, with every hair curl fully rounded, as well as the tiniest feather tips on the eagle. Each letter shows full and complete precision from the bold strike. The surfaces are simply outstanding, with nary a hint of handling, retaining the full delicacy of the mint's mirror surface. 1905. PCGS graded Proof 67. CAC. PQ. A lovely gem proof which is right at the top grade level of those seen by PCGS. This coin shows full mint brilliance and reflectivity, but what really sets it apart is the extraordinary quality of the surfaces. Any specialist knows how delicate the mirror fields are, where just a touch or wipe can lower the proof grade quickly to more average levels, yet somehow this sparkling jewel defied the odds and survived in pristine magnificence, just waiting to be enjoyed for generations by the next lucky collector who purchases it. Only 144 struck. Pop 3; 4 finer; 3 in 67 Cameo; 1 in 67+ Cameo. (PCGS # 7931) Estimate Value $25,000 - 27,000

Lot 1154
1910. NGC graded Proof 67. A sharp strike with full definition at the top of the eagle's wings, an area seldom seen even approaching this sharp on business strikes of this date. Furthermore, the surfaces are fantastic, with the satin Roman finish that was more popular than the more Matte style of the initial output in 1908. These Roman Finish proofs have a blend between the matte and shiny finish of past. If you desire just one super gem of this series, then here is the perfect coin to pursue, with radiant mint color and just a hint of antique gold tone, with a perfect strike and virtually perfect preservation.

One of the facts that is worth knowing is that only a fraction of this dates production seems to exist. The mints records state that only 682 pieces were struck, yet approximately 135 or so exist. What happened to the balance of these? They were likely melted and never released, as this comparatively large production of proofs did not enter the marketplace--otherwise this issue would be somewhat common if that many were indeed sold to collectors. Today it appears that 1910 was more of a normal issue of proofs of probably 150 or so pieces sold, with normal attrition accounting for a handful of lost pieces today, but certainly not over 450 pieces lost! Bear these facts in mind when formulating your bid. Pop 10; 5 finer, 2 in 67 Star, 1 in 67+, 2 in 68. (PCGS # 7959) Estimate Value $50,000 - UP

1911-D. PCGS graded MS-64. Strong D. This is the key date to the quite popular Indian Quarter eagle series. Not only does it have by far the lowest mintage of any date and mint, but sparkling near gems like this example are in high demand. Most collectors, if they obtain an example of the 1911-D at all, usually end up with a lightly circulated coin for their sets, but here is a magnificent mint state coin with precious few marks, the strong D mintmark, and booming visual appeal. Well struck and frosty. Only 55,680 struck. Pop 310; 50 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7943) Estimate Value $17,000 - 18,000

1911-D, Strong D. PCGS graded MS-62. Mostly untoned with bright, fresh mint surfaces and the expected solid strike. This is the key date to the series and while most of the survivors known fall in to lower grades, this handsome MS62 should please any astute numismatist who is seeking a solid representative for their collection. If one has th the finances, this pleasing coin would make an excellent selection for ths cornerstone coin of the Indian quarter eagle date set (PCGS # 7943) Estimate Value $7,000 - 7,500

Lot 1157
1911-D, Strong D. PCGS graded MS-62. Beautiful rich golden toning and free of all but minr signs of bag handling. The majority of these entered circulation unnoticed, as mintages were not generally followed by the early collectors of the day. Furthermore few collectors could afford to collect this series as these were produced, so most were seen as simply another gold quarter eagle. Generations later, when collecting gold coins be much more popular this low mintage key became the focus of the Indian Quarter eagle set, and the grade which is obtained to represent this key date 1911-D, generally defines the qualtiy of the entire collection. This pleasant mint state coin will cetainly find many bidders who desire its charms (PCGS # 7943) Estimate Value $7,000 - 7,500
